abc Type Fire Extinguisher

Fire Extinguisher is classified as per fire extinguishing capacity, ABC type fire extinguisher is used to extinguish ABC class fire risk. Cylinder extinguishes media contain mono ammonium powder.

Class A — Fires involving solid combustible, materials of organic nature such as wood, paper, rubber, plastics, etc, where the cooling effect of water is essential.

Class B — Fires involving flammable liquids or liquefiable solids or the like where a blanketing effect is essential.

Class C — Fires involving flammable gases under pressure including liquefied gases, where it is necessary to inhibit the burning gas at fast rate with inert gas, powder or vaporizing liquid for extinguishment. Nevertheless, these are very valuable in the early stages of fire. The most important features of these extinguishers are there immediately available and can be used by one/two-person(s). Fully charged portable fire extinguishers shall not be more than 17 kg. The extinguishing medium is discharged and directed into the fire by storage pressure or release of pressurized charged storage in a cartridge. IS 14609:1999 standards for dry chemical powder used in ABC type fire extinguisher The chemical content of the declared base material shall be checked as per the procedure given below. The method is intended to determine the mono-ammonium phosphate content of a multipurpose chemical fire extinguishing agent which may contain waterproofing and fluidizing agents and other materials required for satisfactory performance. It is not applicable to products containing other alkali phosphates or water-alcohol Soluble compounds which react with aqueous sodium hydroxide. The following apparatus shall be used:

A = analytical balance, capable of weighing accurately to 0.1 mg;
B = centrifuge tubes, 100-ml capacity preferably cone-shaped;
C = centrifuge;
D = steam bath, capable of maintaining approximately 80°C;
E = pH meter or trimester;
F = burette, 5-ml capacity, graduated in 0.1 ml divisions, alkali-resistant Stopcock; and
G = oven, vacuum, capable of operating in the range of 60°C.

Reagent grade chemicals shall be used unless otherwise indicated. Other grades may be used provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is of sufficiently high purity to permit its use without lessening the accuracy of the determination:

A = absolute or denatured ethanol (a reagent blank is required if denatured alcohol is used);
B= 50% ethanol - Mix 1 volume of absolute ethanol (or appropriate volume of denatured ethanol) with 1 volume of water; and
C— Sodium hydroxide' (1.0 mdl/1), Dissolve 40 to 45 g df NaOH in one liter of water. Standardize potentiometrically against primary standard potassium, acid phthalate. Place the warm tubes in wanned centrifuge tube holders and centrifuge at approximately 1 500 r/min for 5 min. Without .delay decant the centrifugate quantitatively (with the aid of little water) into a 250-ml beaker. Repeat the extraction twice more transferring the extracts to the original 250-ml beaker or unit sample turns white or natural color.
